This project aims at promoting biomass briquettes in the country so as to reduce or eliminate the use of wood fuel to combat climate change. The project is working on five objectives which collectively focus on improving the sector within the country. Biomass briquettes production started in Tanzania some decades ago, however, to date the sector is not yet performing well. According to few studies which have been conducted in Tanzania and in East Africa region, the obstacles hindering the sector’s development include the quality issues associated with lack of trained experts as main driving factors, lack of aggressive awareness campaigns, price and availability among others. It is against this context that REPOA works with TIRDO to address the technology gaps and lack of awareness to facilitate high adoption rate of biomass briquettes in the country. At the end of the project, it is expected that the status of biomass briquettes producers within the country will be well known (their location, production capacity, technology used, raw materials, and challenges encountered during production and selling of products), the quality improved to desired standard and awareness creation to the community is conducted. During survey a total of 58 biomass briquettes producers were visited in 12 regions (Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Morogoro, Iringa, Tabora, Mwanza, Lindi, Mtwara, Pwani and Mjini Magharibi- Zanzibar), 122 biomass briquettes users and non-users were interviewed to get their views regarding biomass briquettes and 44 biomass briquettes samples were collected for laboratory testing. In case of improving the quality, different testing has been conducted and four formulation ratios have passed TBS standards. Simple machines including eco-carbonizer, mixer and millers have been designed and fabricated to aid the study activities. Objective. This project aims at promoting production and the use of biomass briquettes in the country so as to reduce or eliminate the use of wood fuel to combat climate change. The project is working on different objectives which collectively focus on improving the sector within the country. Activities. 1. Formulation of mixing ratios for production of biomass briquettes using different biomass materials and laboratory testing of its quality 2. Development of hand book guide for production of biomass briquettes 3. Distribution of improved biomass briquettes (produced from formulated mixing ratios) to 25 users (19 households and 6 street food vendors) for testing the quality
